Hey Friends!
I love a good list of favorites. Don’t tell me what you are tolerating. No. We don’t want that. Tell me what is delighting you. Tell me what you can’t shut up about. Tell me everything.
I’ll go first.
Earrings by Emma - because your girl is allergic to jewelry, I have to either make my own or buy from this young entrepreneur! She makes plastic posts which I can wear all the love long day without worrying about an allergic reaction.
Be prepared to see me sharing and resharing this stunning essay by Sarah Aziza
Transparent post it’s - can you even?! I find myself using a lot of post-it’s as I work and rework the structure of my new book, and these transparent post-it’s are so much fun! On the brightly colored post it, I write about each chapter. But on the transparent post it I can write about the tone of the chapter, the emotions I’m trying to evoke, the sensations I feel. So now I can see both the physical and emotional structure of the book!
My partner and I love tv shows that explore time travel. We fell in love with Dark (Netflix) but now we are watching Bodies (Netflix) and it’s definitely got our attention.
I attended a virtual book club with Project NIA. I hadn’t read the book…
but they were talking about a little known abolitionist. Since I’m trying to teach myself about slavery in America, I wanted to least listen in. They were so welcoming, and the discussion was fantastic. I was so glad I participated.
I am making a few changes to my library because I need more shelving (surprise, surprise). I’m hoping IKEA’s Billy bookcases come through for me. And I got a few invisible bookshelves that I hope will look great in the space under the window.
My love for Black History memorabilia continues. My latest purchase is a pin from Shirley Chisholm’s campaign for President. I can’t wait to receive it.
YOUR TURN!
This week I played in the dirt. Not weeding, not lawn care. But actually just playing in the dirt with my kiddo. I felt my inner child come alive as I picked up acorns and created piles and used sticks and decorated with grass. It was great.
But after playing in the dirt and kicking a ball and climbing a playground, it was time to walk back home. And we were tired. I called my husband to come get us. I’m not always the best at leaning on him. My independent-I-can-do-it-girl-power disposition sometimes gets in the way. But I took out my phone and asked him to come hold my hand and walk us back. He did; it was lovely.
By the time we got back home, I remembered that I’m not really supposed to be out in the sun and be super physical. Slow in the sun. Workout in air-conditioning. That’s my speed and my body reminded me that I’m free to follow those rules. lol. I’m okay though. I laid down for a bit and my body recovered. Sometimes freedom is about what’s best for my body, instead of pushing my body.
Full of play,
Austin
One of my favs--GirlTREK, a sisterhood of more than a million black women taking the radical step to walk for their own self-care. The Black History Bootcamps provided a safe walk and talk space for me, especially in 2020. I loved listening to the podcasts and learning about people I had never heard of or knew so little about while I walked in my neighborhood. I suspect I will appreciate them even more this year. "You never have to ask permission to save your own life," is one of the mantras of GirlTREK. Love it. And I look super cute in my 3/4 zip royal blue pullover. Yeah, GirlTrek is definitely my Fav!
hey Austin, great list thank you - my favourite book of the last year has to be Forgiveness: An Exploration by Marina Cantacuzino and i am recommending that and lending it to everyone - what is great about it is that it's not a prescription of this is what Forgiveness looks like and this is how you have to forgive, but just what it says, an exploration into story after story of accounts of forgiveness with some hectic contexts and what happened or didn't happen when people did or didn't...
Keep on
