As I scroll through posts on Instagram, it is very clear that the kids are back to school (quick prayer that it lasts - all the parents said “amen”). At my last Troublemaker’s Q + A, an educator brought up the question - “as we head back to school and we say we want to keep kids at the center, how do we not lose the discussions of equity?”
My first impulse was to share a newsletter about how COVID disproportionately has impacted the Black community.
My second impulse was to say I think this is where white supremacy gets really tricky. It gets really tricky because we really like the idea that we’re all in it together. And it sounds so sexy. But it is often just not true. What the hood is experiencing is different from the barrio or the reservation. A rural community is experiencing something different than a suburban community. And we all know that families in the same cities or even the same districts can be facing vastly different realities regarding access. We’re …
