Dear Troublemakers,
This is like the 5th time I’ve sat down to write you this newsletter. When I finish and hit send, I will likely go take a nap. This week was a lot and my body knows that to be true. She feels the weight and is in need of good care in the midst of it all. (PS so does yours).
I could list out the events of this week, from Ukraine to Texas to Florida to Georgia to Minnesota. But you likely know them. The bills and invasions and courtrooms. Attacks all around. It is a lot and its too much.
I shared this on the socials today and share it here in case you need the same reminder I wrote for myself… Sometimes the only ounce of comfort we have is in knowing that we aren’t the only ones who care. I can’t fix the world, but I can join hands with those trying- even though it doesn’t feel like nearly enough. The protesting, the resisting, the giving, the volunteering, the speaking up matters when the world is falling apart.
Friends, this newsletter is about getting into good trouble - like John Lewis style trouble. I need to hear how you are doing that. It doesn’t need to feel huge or dramatic.
Please share in the comments how you are getting into some good trouble. I just want to be reminded that I’m not (that we’re not) doing it alone.
A FEW OTHER THINGS FOR YOU THIS WEEK…
If you are in Florida or Texas right now, please make some noise about these attacks on trans kids (and their support systems) and the protection of white feelings over actual history. And if you don’t live there, let’s make some noise about it too.
The nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson marks the first time in the 230 year history of the Supreme Court that a Black woman has ever been nominated. We are long overdue for this moment and I still celebrate that its here.
Ice Cream and Ashley C. Ford?! Was I the exact target consumer they had in mind when they created this podcast? Can’t wait to listen!
WEEKLY WISDOM
“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any.” - Alice Walker
Stay wild and holy and free. And take a deep breath and unclench your jaw.
- Austin
This has to be the most beautiful comment section on the internet right now
I’m here in Texas. I’m making noise. And I am a CASA working with kids in foster care (a mandatory reporter) and I will never turn in a trans kid, their parents or any medical professionals who serve them.
