Hi Troublemakers! I’m overwhelmed by your participation in our new endeavor to learn more together. So many of you have contributed resources, stories, data and aha moments. I’ve most enjoyed wanting your conversations unfold. It brings me so much joy.
This week, we are focused on local history of housing. Many of you have already started looking at your own home histories, community histories or the histories of your town. I did a little research of Detroit, and discovered there is still a literal wall in the city, that was built to separate a Black community from the area where a white developer wanted to build housing for white families. The only way to get the funding, was to first build this 5 foot concrete wall.
It’s now painted with gorgeous murals, reflective of the city’s Black community. But for all it’s current beauty, it remains a testament to the racist choices of our country.
