I Shall Shout For The Rights of All Mankind!
Dear Troublemakers,
Are you as sad as I am about Black History Month coming to an end or nah because we know we can and MUST be encountering Black history outside the shortest month of the year?!
One of my favorite loves is history and the ways we are able to access it in 2023 sometimes blows my mind (in a good way, not the mind numbing way so many obsessed with maintaining white supremacy want to hide accurate history with half-truths and incomplete narratives or simply ban factual history altogether). To have the ability to hear recordings and watch footage from my sofa without having to step foot into a museum is such a gift - one worth preserving and protecting and amplifying!
I spent much of this month sharing just a few of the incredible people worth honoring this month and always. The first person on my list to amplify was Pauli Murray. There has been a renaissance of Pauli's name and accomplishments in recent years, but please believe it is nearly impossible to be a Black, woman preacher/minister and not know Pauli Murray. Such a brilliant mind but also deeply vulnerable about their struggles to be understood.
There are so many Pauli Murray quotes worth memorizing, but their quote about "drawing a larger circle" and "shouting for the rights of all mankind" always hits me. Today I'm thinking about shouting as I spend some time recording the audiobook version of my new book I'm Still Here: Loving Myself in a World Not Made For Me.
Let it be an invitation to you as well.
