It happens every year. We know this. Our feeds fill up (some years more than others). People who espouse their racist beliefs and enact racist polices select a MLK quote they can twist out of context and drain of all its profundity. Then they share it proudly, and if I may be so bold, smugly.
Its frustrating every year. Because his words in their rightful context have the power to inspire relevant change, to push us closer to the vision of equality- a vision not yet realized. Those of us still reading his books, and listening to his speeches know that his words are more relevant and timeless with each passing year. More damning, more inciting, more challenging. The vision, the thoughtfulness, the framework, the hope of Martin Luther King Jr is so much more than a quote or sound bite.
And yet…
This MLK day read his words. Reflect on his life. And also come face to face with the conditions that warranted his words. The systems and racism that defined his life, and ultimately stole it.
I could give you a list, but Bernice already has!
Love + Justice,
Austin
Thank you, thank you for this reminder Austin! I am a Latina grandma but look white and have experienced 'white privilege' all my life. Our 'all white' book club met to discuss our January book, The Invention of Wings. Its about slavery and womens rights. I could not have been more thrilled to lead this discussion on MLK day AND after going to an MLK event in my community where once again learned so much about continued racism. I learned to become more humble, to listen better and become involved. I shared your book and even quoted several passages and was met with thoughtful questions and discussion. It is in learning, listening, speaking up and reading books like yours that will keep me 'getting into good trouble'! Thank you for all you do - cecilia
Thank you. I listened to several of his sermons this morning while on the exercise bike. Was challenged with how relevant his words still are.
